Black City Farm - Agrientepreneurship Black City Farm is a project that started off during the COVID-19 Pandemic, when the government distributed seeds among township population as a response to the food crisis. Ikhaya Le Langa provides a space and greenhouse tents for individuals to plant and care for their crops. When their plants are ready to harvest, they can gather their supply and have the option to bring them home or to sell them to markets. Studies have consistently demonstrated the importance of turning urban gardens into some sort of economic revenue. By selling produce into the community, there is more incentive to keep maintaining their growth. For this reason, Black City Farm promotes using their greenhouse tents for people to transform their seeds into agrientrepenuership. Through partnerships with Mr. Price Foundation and African Growers, Black City Farm has been able to grow its number of greenhouses. Not only are greenhouses located at Ikhaya le Langa, but some have also been placed on top of various Mr. Price locations to contribute to the growing necessity of rooftop gardens. Nande Mkatshwa, who started at Ikhaya le Langa this year, manages the greenhouses and cares for the plants daily. At the moment, Ikhaya le Langa hosts 9 greenhouse tents and maintains their own gardens to grow produce used in the kitchen. Although the greenhouse tents are privately owned by members of the community, Nande works to ensure that the crops continue to grow. The biggest use of Black City Farm goes towards creating the signature chili sauce of Ikhaya le Langa, Ichili le Langa. The sauce has become so popular that the organization has received a back order from customers abroad. The sauce is made from chilis that are all grown on site. Nande is currently looking for interns within Langa to work on Black City Farm. The internship, which lasts one month, will include learning how to plant, grow, and sell your own organic produce right in Langa. Although the internships are unpaid, interns will receive the rights to a greenhouse tent after completing the training.
