insted

InSTED is a new hub within iKhaya le Langa that works to bridge local communities, academic institutions, and corporates in sharing knowledge. The vision of InSTED is to create an environment where knowledge-sharing happens naturally and organically. This is achieved through facilitating workshops and events where local communities, local and international academics and corporates come together to explore new ideas and technologies.

Mission

InSTED seeks to create a digitally enabled space that allows experiential learning to occur through various channels. It will facilitate collaborative local and international projects in InSTED. Leading to sustainable township communities.

Vision

To enable the creation of a mutually beneficial model of research pathways that allow African communities to share their stories and innovations through an aspirational lens.

InSTED will offer a variety of services such as:

1. Community Call Centre:
A unit that will provide business processing skills for Langa. Call Center skills development. Community based tourism (CBT) enterprise support. There will be 4-8 employed youth. The call center will provide valuable job skills to youth in the area.

2. Research Facility:
A community-based research facility for the pursuit of sustainable townships.This institute has already partnered with Human Science Research Council (HSRC) to produce a baseline study for Langa centennial year. It is envisaged that InSTED will link to our multiple US, European, and African universities. Corporate market research solutions as well as providing resources for domestic and international researchers.

3. Media:
Studio to share stories and learning between historically disadvantaged communities. The studio will be home to numerous podcasts and programs. Content will be created by the Langa community and other stakeholders and partners.

4. Communiversity:
College-preparatory program for Langa residents. The Communiversity program is an avenue for youth that have dropped out before completing high school. The program will specifically focus on providing a curriculum to youth in the area to provide career or college readiness skills. The main partner for the project is Communiversity, which provides an 8-course College Prep and Pre-Professional Program. Align with academics, they also support development in stress management and emotional intelligence.

5. Study Abroad Unit:
Community-based study abroad unit. As a community based study abroad program, we can provide community lead activities and curriculum in a more sustainable manner. Providing more opportunities for underrepresented communities locally and abroad.
