Balwin property Co. bricklaying training

Balwin Property Company, South Africa's largest sectional property group, has been a critical partner of ours in building essential encouragement for the community. Through Balwin's generous funding, Ikhaya le Langa has been able to construct a vision based on training young men to be able to develop their own communities.

Like all townships, Langa continues to suffer from the wounds of Apartheid. Opportunities and jobs are minimal, and the government fails to acknowledge the potential and cultural value of these communities. Thus, many males find themselves socially excluded and without the ability to flourish. Ikhaya le Langa and Balwin Property Company have developed an incredible vision to resist the government's post-Apartheid policies towards township growth. In this vision, Ikhaya le Langa would find young men within the community that need assets to demonstrate their competency. Then, Balwin would fund 9-week trainings hosted at Ikhaya le Langa for these men to become bricklayers and learn the art of construction. After finishing their training, these young men would go on to work on construction projects within Langa in order to put their newfound skills back into the community.

This vision has been a success. So far, Ikhaya le Langa has hosted ten men from Langa through this project, four of which are currently working on building a primary school in Langa. This has served as a revitalization project for the township's economy, boosting the skills needed for self-sustainable growth.

Balwin and Ikhaya le Langa are building the capacity for Langa to rebuild itself. Township infrastructure is completely neglected by the South African government, and any federal initiatives to assist the communities stems from a handout approach that further victimizes the black population. Apartheid completely robbed the townships of their potential, and we are on a mission to prove that townships contain the catalyst for change. Ikhaya le Langa understands that townships do not need to be victimized; they need the capacity and encouragement to thrive like any other part of the nation.

The biggest use of Black City Farm goes towards creating the signature chili sauce of Ikhaya le Langa, Ichili le Langa. The sauce has become so popular that the organization has received a back order from customers abroad. The sauce is made from chilis that are all grown on site.

At the moment, Ikhaya le Langa hosts 9 greenhouse tents and maintains their own gardens to grow produce used in the kitchen.
